Youth Lagoon – The Year of Hibernation
Happy Tuesday!
When I’m gone from the blog for more than a week, I always feel a self-imposed need to explain why.
But there’s no “big” news. We haven’t been on vacation; nothing out of the ordinary has happened. We’ve just gotten caught up in all the small, beautiful parts of life. Because it is all rather random, I give you the catch up bullet point style…
Nothing incredibly exciting…we’re here, we’re living and loving and taking in each moment for all it’s worth. There is something to be said for the pleasure that comes in the every day. Enjoy your week!
Like much of the US, we suffered from last week’s heat wave ‘o summer eleven. By Saturday, we were ready for reprieve. Something to the effect of an impromptu drive up north to see a band we love outdoors, accompanied by a picnic dinner, lawn games and stellar family time. It didn’t hurt that all the money raised went to Michigan Midwives and when the sun set I *almost* needed a sweatshirt.
I’ve mentioned them in this space before – Breathe Owl Breathe is a band worth your time.
It was a night that held all of our very favorite things: finishing Charlotte’s Web, playing Go Fish, dancing, snuggling and engaging in family Washers competition. In short, the kind of summer night I live for.
I’m so enjoying sharing details from our wedding, and I love the comments and notes I’ve been getting about them – thank you. I have many more wedding posts for you!
But I thought I’d take a break from that tonight and show you what I’m most excited about: this beautiful family we’ve created. Kiddo is quite happy about it, too.
We decided early on to do our own music. We’re both really into our tunes and I just didn’t like the idea of some stranger at our wedding, announcing stuff and playing music we might not love.
Instead, we had the husband of my Matron of Honor announce (he was awesome!) and used iTunes to keep music rolling for the ceremony, dinner, dancing and pool shenanigans.
I’ll admit taking on the music responsibility was a stress. It was fun, and we now own even more enjoyable music, but determining music flow and how much to add to a playlist was harder than I thought it would be.
If you need dancing music, however, dial me. Kyle, Aidan and I spent hours upon hours dancing in the living room and kitchen to test songs for “danceability.” If the boys were really getting into it, I downloaded. If it seemed awkward, we skipped it. One of my older sisters was instrumental (no pun intended) in providing suggestions and I’m grateful for her help.
Without further introduction, the artists that made up our playlist:
Sigúr Rós. Phish. Counting Crows. Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová. Florence + The Machine. Fleet Foxes. Pete Townshend. The Black Keys. Broken Bells. Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros. Breath Owl Breathe. Iron & Wine. Jack Johnson. Mumford & Sons. Dave Matthews Band. The Swell Season. Sarah MacLachlan. Death Cab for Cutie. Ben Harper. The New Pornographers. Rilo Kiley. Dispatch. Ingrid Michaelson. Wilco. Passion Pit. Andrew Bird. Neil Young. P!nk. Jamiroquai. Adele. Katy Perry. R.E.M. Usher. Jay-Z. The Black Eyed Peas. Elvis Presley. O.A.R. Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. Naughty by Nature. Phoenix. Dead or Alive. Sugarland. Lady Gaga. Britney Spears. Far East Movement. Jessie J. Eddie Vedder. Pitbull. Vanilla Ice. Paul McCartney. Bob Dylan. Lynard Skynard. Led Zepplin. Norah Jones. Paul Simon. Sufjan Stevens. The Steelwells. Chris Brown. Flo Rida. Taio Cruz. Enrique Iglesias. Poco. The Allman Brothers. Cat Stevens. Def Leppard. Leona Lewis. Beyoncé. Shakira. Jason Derũlo. Young MC. Arcade Fire. John Lennon. MGMT. Kenny Loggins. Journey.
The bridal party walked out to Njósnavélin by Sigur Rós and I walked down the aisle to Hoppipolla by Sigur Rós. It was beautiful. We played our current music obsession – Mumford & Sons – as much as possible, including the unity portion of our ceremony. (We did something different from the traditional unity candle – details to come!)
It’s funny – each time I hear any of these songs, it brings me back to our beautiful wedding evening and I get goosebumps all over again. Music is amazing like that. It also makes me want to dance…oh was the dancing ever fun.
Sometimes I speak Spanish. I’m almost always, however, listening to music.
In honor of the fact that I will be watching one of my favorite bands, Wilco, from the fifth row this evening with two of my awesome girlfriends, I thought it appropriate to dive into a music post. I present to you 15 songs I believe are worth a download. Some of them are newer than others, all are pleasing to my ears. I would love it if you would take me a moment to give me and everyone else who might be reading this a few suggestions in the comments. Even (or maybe especially!) if your taste in music is in sharp contrast to what I list here!
